Shoveling coal to feed the train
Having a good fireman was essential for a steam locomotive. The fireman had to be able to shovel coal into the firebox. This was a labor intensive job that required skill and practice. If the fireman wasn’t able to shovel coal, the railroad wouldn’t hire him.
